Amelie is a relative newbie to the land of Hellwaukee and the surrounding areas, though she has plans to entrench herself in the community soon. Currently to be found at the Colonel, where she is convalescing, she has recently allied herself with the Fighting Phils, but remains truly unaffiliated.
Good-natured, but tough and lethal when she has to be, Amelie can be a useful friend or a dangerous enemy. Always generous with drinks, but often because she wants something out of you.
Amelie was born in 2005 in Shorewood, Wisconsin to professor parents (mom was a historian, dad a physicist). She lived in the city until 2022, when the group who her family had become associated with decided it needed to send out two expedition parties, one to the east and one to the west, to better understand what had happened, set up trade routes and start re-establishing society.
Her party, which headed west, was made up of 19 people (she was the youngest {17}; her uncle Charlie the oldest {56}). The group was decimated during their 3-year journey west (eventually turning south), with only 8 members surviving the trip. When they made it to the coast, near the Bay Area and found nothing there, they elected to move south until they found larger, more civilized, groups and eventually joined up with a community in Western Mexico, near present-day Hermosillo.
The group settled there. Amelie and her mother (her father died on the road), along with the other six former Wisconsinites opted to stay in Mexico. The survivors made new lives for themselves in Mexico. They joined the community, married into the community, had children. Amelie had many friends in that community - she was fun and pretty and vibrant - but no family except for her mother and her uncle, who was now an old man. Charlie taught her what would become the most important lesson of her life: the art of distillation.
Four years ago, when her mother lay dying in their shelter, she called Amelie to her room:
"Do you remember the road home?"
"I think so, yes. North, then East. When you find the great river, the Mississippi, use the Riverbook to figure out where you are and figure out what direction The Great Lake is and go there."
"Right... good." Somehow, even when you were over fifty, even after a world-altering apocalypse, your mother is still able to turn you into an approval-craving dog. "You'll get to Wisconsin eventually. You need to find your way to Milwaukee, near the Lake. It's been forty years, but when we left, we had an agreement that they would maintain a presence on the University campus. Find it, and give them this..."
Slowly she reached behind her cot and pulled out a large - ridiculously huge, really - book with homemade binding.
"This is the complete account of our mission to the West. Your father kept it while we were travelling to San Francisco until the day he died. Then he passed it on to your uncle Charlie, who gave it to me when he left...
"Find Curtin Hall and give it to whoever is in charge there." She was dead within an hour. Amelie left the community she had spent most of her life with the next morning.
